I was born in Otahuhu, Auckland but grew up in Ōtepoti Dunedin. I am of Samoan heritage with my father being from Pata Falelatai. I went to Corstophine Primary School, Macandrew Intermediate, and then Queens High School where my favourite subjects were English, art and history. My teachers Heidi Hayward (Yr8 teacher) and Barbara Williamson (English teacher) had a big impact on myself as both women were passionate and incredibly intelligent in their individual fields. They pushed me to be better and to want more for myself. While at school I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a career, I
just knew the subjects I enjoyed. I went to Foundation studies straight out of High school. This is a year-long course, but I also worked part-time as a housemaid to support myself throughout that year. I am now a Creative Advisor within the Ara Toi team, working for the Dunedin City Council. I provide assistance and advice to the creative community, support access to
resources so they can improve their practice and have the chance to take up career opportunities. My favourite part of this role is connecting creatives here in the city to all the opportunities that are available to them! It is my responsibility to make space for you all - there is enough room for us all to succeed, we just need to find the right career pathway that suits your skills, aspirations, and capacity.
If you could give some some words of wisdom to your younger self - What would you say?
