I was born in Samoa (Leulumoega – Dad's village, Manono – Mum’s village) and grew up in West Auckland. I worked at McDonald’s straight out of school. I started as a Shift Manager and then progressed through to 2IC, to Regional Manager and then Senior Regional Manager and now Franchisee (I own 5 McDonald’s restaurants). This is my dream job! I get to work with my husband (and 400-500 staff) and have the flexibility to be a Mum and business owner.
I have a story like many of our Pasifika students. I was brought up in a strict Samoan home and understand the demands on our young ones. I would like to share with them options that are not the norm for our people. Our parents tell us to go get and education and then find a job that pays well. Why do we not encourage our students of get an education and then go and be their own boss?
If you could give some words of wisdom to your younger self – what would you say?
