I live and have grown up in Dunedin where I live with my wife and three kids. I am of Samoan heritage with my village being Taufusi. I went to Kavanagh College (now Trinity College) where my favourite subject was chemistry. My chemistry teacher had a big impact as he believed there were no limits to the knowledge any student could be taught.
After school I did a gap year and worked at multiple workplaces, mainly temping for a recruitment company. Quality Bakers, freezing works, scrap metal, moving company and eventually landed a full-time job at Hoyts movie theatre. I am now a director and architectural designer for Stevenson Design Limited. My favourite part of this role is designing buildings around the region and seeing each project come to life. I see a lot of potential for pacific island people to be more involved in the creative aspect of architecture, and I wanted to help inform and guide students towards a field which may seem daunting.
If you could give some words of wisdom to your younger self – what would you say?
